You may have never heard of them, but they are definitely worth a listen. The Spinto Band, comprised of five guys from Wilmington, Delaware, have been rocking out together since their high school days in the late 90’s. They made it big when a song off of their 2005 debut album, Nice and Nicely Done, made it into a Sears television commercial. These guys have been touring and making more and more music ever since. Their new album, Cool Cocoon, being released this week, is their second studio album in less than a year. These two albums also mark the band’s triumphant return to using their own record label, Spintonic Recordings.
The first single off Cool Cocoon entitled, Shake it Off, was recently released. Now as a person who listens to quite a plethora of musical genres, I do have to say, if this song is any implication of the album, I could definitely get down with it. When the song starts out it’s reminiscent of a Beatles song until all the orchestration comes in and I’m reminded of Weezer. It’s got a happy tone to it even though the subject matter is kinda sad. No one likes being treated unfairly in a relationship, being strung along or used. However, this song shows an upside to all that pain. It makes me feel like it really could be as easy as shaking it off. It could be the new mantra for getting over a loved one. I, for one can’t stand sappy songs anyway. Next time life hands me a rotten apple, I too will Shake it Off.
Just from listening to this one song, I’ve decided to explore the other stuff The Spinto Band has to offer. I have not been disappointed. It’s a fresh sound in a world where Justin Beibers and Call Me Maybes have me losing hope in the future of music. I mean, any band who releases their new CD also in vinyl and cassette, is alright in my book, especially when they come in a limited edition mustard yellow.
